Veinseal®

Veinseal® is a revolutionary core additive, patented, manufactured and sold by IGC Technologies, LLC Together with HA-International as the exclusive distributor of choice in North America, and Hüttenes Albertus Chemische Werke GmbH as preferred, International distributor, the Veinseal® line of quality products are rapidly becoming the innovative treatment process for control of major defects in gray and ductile iron castings. The use of Veinseal® represents a revolution in core making for the foundry industry. It is a complete process change, NOT just the use of a different core additive.

Veinseal® is specifically designed to control costly veining and penetration defects in gray and ductile iron castings. Casting finish is also improved significantly, reducing or eliminating the need for additional refractory coatings. AND, unlike other types of products available today, Veinseal® dramatically decreases the required level of resin usage recommended for high-quality performance in the core making process.

What is veining?

Veining appears as a thin fin on a casting. It results from a crack formed in a sand core or mold component due to rapid thermal expansion. The formation is a slight cavity into which liquid metal penetrates. Upon solidification, the resulting vein can be seen.

Diagram of how Veining can occur.
How is Veinseal® used to correct these problems?

Veinseal® works in conjunction with silica sand to reduce the stress of sudden sand expansion that occurs at approximately 1000 to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. First, the unique action of Veinseal® ingredients act as fluxing agents on the silica sand, improving the casting finish and producing a surface that is less susceptible to metal penetration defects. Other ingredients attract heat, while still other ingredients help absorb gases, particularly N2 or NO, which are extremely difficult to remove by any other means. Further testing of Veinseal® has also indicated that the material's absorption promotes a reduced tendency for carbon pickup in gray and ductile iron.

What amount of Veinseal® should be used?

The amount of additive to use is dependent on the type of binder used. Usage typically ranges from approximately 3 - 10%. Clearly the actual amount used should be as low as possible depending on the severity of the problem.

When should Veinseal® 14000 and 15000 be used?

In lighter weight castings, where veining is usually the greater concern, Veinseal® 14000 is the product to use. For heavier section castings, or castings in which penetration is the major problem, Veinseal® 15000 is the product of choice.

Example using Veinseal®

Veinseal® 14000 was used to produce a brake rotor free of veining defects AND a visibly improved casting finish.
